European farmers’ responses to higher commodity prices: Cropland expansion or forestlands preservation?

چکیده

The interconnection between commodity prices, agricultural expansion and forestland conservation by farmers has received little scholarly attention in existing literature. This paper analyses the influence of European farmers’ responsiveness to changes agri-commodity prices on how they manage trade-offs preservation. In so doing, we rely a comprehensive dataset relating holdings over period 2008–2017, covering 128 regions, use recursive equation system that links economic output per area, latter privately owned farmers. Controlling for farm characteristics, geographical spillovers as well regressor endogeneity, find results suggesting there is indeed evidence such trade-off. Specifically, with increased expand crop production (respectively land), which reversely conflicts private forestland. Replicating analysis different subsamples confirms robustness these findings. Based results, advocate further incentive towards preservation forests holdings.

Commodity prices push European policies

The recent soaring cost of many basic foods worldwide has forced a new focus on many areas of policy and in Europe the issue of genetically modified crops has attracted renewed media and wider interest. The reason is that the European Union has proved resistant to almost all perceived or promoted advantages of GM crops. Environmental groups opposed to the technology gained early advantage becau...

Watershed responses to Amazon soya bean cropland expansion and intensification.

The expansion and intensification of soya bean agriculture in southeastern Amazonia can alter watershed hydrology and biogeochemistry by changing the land cover, water balance and nutrient inputs. Several new insights on the responses of watershed hydrology and biogeochemistry to deforestation in Mato Grosso have emerged from recent intensive field campaigns in this region. Because of reduced e...

Commodity Prices and Growth∗

In this paper we propose an endogenous growth model of commodity-rich economies in which: (i) long-run (steady-state) growth is endogenous and yet independent of commodity prices; (ii) commodity prices affect short-run growth through transitional dynamics; and (iii) the status of net commodity importer/exporter is endogenous. We argue that these predictions are consistent with historical eviden...

Determinants of Commodity Prices

Financial returns, although seemingly unpredictable, have been successfully modelled using market and macro-economic factors. The effect of these factors, however, may vary with time and only be statistically significant for specific periods. This paper utilises factors that have been found to capture financial market returns and applies them to the modelling of a broad set of commodities. A ch...

Commodity High Performance Computing at Commodity Prices

The entry price of supercomputing has traditionally been very high. As processing elements, operating systems, and switch technology become cheap commodity parts, building a powerful supercomputer at a fraction of the price of a proprietary system becomes realistic. We have recently purchased, in support of both our local and national collaborations, a dedicated computational cluster of eight D...
